The fallow deer is not native to Central Europe. However, palaeontological evidence suggests that fallow deer were present during the warm interglacial periods of the Quaternary. Then, with the onset of glaciation, fallow deer retreated to warmer areas of the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The return of the fallow deer to Europe was mainly due to the ancient Romans. They were brought to the Czech lands from France in the 15th century. Fallow deer live in areas similar to their native Mediterranean and southern Asian habitats, which consist of sparse deciduous forests broken up by open grazing areas. However, they can also be found in coniferous forests, from where they move to the fields in search of food. They are active during the day and like to bask in the sun on meadows. Their diet changes with the seasons. The hunting season currently runs from 1 July to 31 January. The best time to hunt large fallow bucks is during the mating season, which begins in mid-October and lasts about three-four weeks. During mating, fallow bucks emit a deep, hoarse call that can be heard over long distances. The areas where mating takes place are usually the same as in previous years and are often in open spaces such as meadows and large gaps between deciduous trees. Other hunting periods are also good, such as the period from the beginning of December to the end of January when the fallow deer's coat takes on a particularly attractive beige colour. Hunting often takes place in areas where fallow deer are in search of food. Winter hunting is not easy at all, but it is very challenging and requires a lot of patience and hunting skill, as fallow bucks are extremely cautious and cunning and have excellent senses. They can move very quickly at a safe distance from the hunter. As far as trophies are concerned, in many areas in Czechia there is a good chance of bagging a medal, even silver-gold trophy buck.
